The Real Green Mile

There’s a lot of blown up Western concern regarding how dangerous and unstable Johannesburg is, but this wasn’t my experience at all!

Yes it is supposedly stigmatized as being the city with the world’s highest murder rate, but ironically I felt quite safe. Maybe it was because I travelled with a very pleasant group of people; as opposed to on my own looking like an uninformed tourist. Still, I’m appreciative Smirnoff considered our safety and employed our own security guards from Clause Protection Services which turned out to be quite an interesting adventure in itself.

Meet our bodyguard Leo who is one of the coolest, fittest cats I’ve ever met! He literally reminds me of John Coffey in The Green Mile and would chuckle whenever I addressed him as our favourite friendly giant. (He even knew the mouse in the movie, Mr. Jinks!). In all seriousness though, Leo is amazing at what he does and I felt extremely privileged to share the same bodyguard who looks after 50 Cent and Beyonce when they’re in town! He’s also set to guard the Italian soccer team for South Africa’s FIFA 2010 World Cup.

I will never forget Leo Dioni. Best security guard in Jo’burg who had our back if something was to go wrong. He was completely professional and quick to share stories as you would with friends. He would often go above and beyond to make our day trips and nights out fun. What also intrigued me is Leo’s background in personal training. While I ran out of time to fit in my own private session, Leo threw me some pointers to improve working out your lats and triceps.
